About the American Academy for Addiction Psychiatry

The American Academy of Addiction Psychiatry is a global professional membership organization founded in 1985 with approximately 1,000 members in the United States and around the world. The membership consists of psychiatrists who work with addiction in their practices, faculty at various academic institutions, non-psychiatrist professionals who are making a contribution to the field of addiction psychiatry, as well as residents and medical students.

The Academy was formed to promote accessibility to the highest quality treatment for all who need it, to promote excellence in clinical practice in addiction psychiatry, and to educate the public to influence public policy regarding addictive illness. It provides continuing education for addiction professionals and disseminates new information in the field of addiction psychiatry. The Academy encourages research on the etiology, prevention, identification, and treatment of addictions.

The Academy seeks to facilitate the transfer of research findings to clinical practice, ensuring that addiction-related research and technologies become available to patients and are applied to clinical practice. The Academy is committed to enhancing the relationships of addiction psychiatrists to reimbursement systems, to managed care, and to third- and fourth-party payers. The Academy is committed to the maintenance of quality control and risk management in an era emphasizing cost containment. The Academy strives to strengthen relationships between psychiatrists and primary care physicians for the benefit of addicted and dually diagnosed patients. Finally, the Academy places an emphasis on support for adequate research funding in the addictions. The Academy is excited that this new treatment modality is becoming more readily available and is committed to assuring the quality, accuracy, and validity of the information delivered in this course.
