This online course was prepared by Eric Strain, MD and Jeff Novey, MPH, based on the CSAT-funded curriculum Use of Buprenorphine in the Pharmacologic Management of Opioid Dependence.

Eric Strain, MD. Dr. Strain is a Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. His current responsibilities include maintaining an active research program in substance abuse-related issues, providing clinical care to patients, teaching medical students and houseofficers, and providing administrative supervision of current substance abuse treatment programs and the development of new substance abuse treatment initiatives. In addition, Dr. Strain was Chair of the Food and Drug Administration's Drug Abuse Advisory Committee and has served on various committees for the National Institute on Drug Abuse and the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism.

He is a frequent reviewer for scientific journals in the area of substance abuse, and is on the editorial boards of Drug and Alcohol Dependence, Experimental and Clinical Psychopharmacology, the American Journal of Drug and Alcohol Abuse, and the Journal of Maintenance in the Addictions. He edited, with Maxine Stitzer, the book Methadone Treatment for Opioid Dependence. Dr. Strain is the recipient of several competitive grant awards from the National Institute on Drug Abuse, and has published extensively on substance abuse-related matters.

His research areas have included topics such as the optimal mechanisms for treating patients with substance abuse disorders, including opioid and cocaine dependence, the relationship between substance abuse and other psychiatric disorders, the abuse liability of novel opioids, and the prediction of treatment outcome for patients treated for substance abuse. His studies have included medications such as buprenorphine, methadone and LAAM, and non-pharmacologic treatments for substance abuse disorders.

Jeffrey H. Novey, MPH. Mr. Novey is the Director of Publications Support for the Social and Statistical Sciences Unit at Research Triangle Institute in Durham, North Carolina. He received his Master of Public Health at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He has more than 20 years' experience in writing, research, publications development, and project management in the health and social sciences. He has specializations in public health, health behavior and health education, substance abuse treatment and prevention, pharmacology, and maternal and child health.

Mr. Novey was the Managing Editor of the Maternal and Child Health Journal at the Department of Maternal and Child Health, School of Public Health, at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He served as the Senior Managing Editor of the Journal of Psychoactive Drugs for Haight-Ashbury Publications in San Francisco. He has published articles on clinical and research perspectives of dual disorders and substance abuse in the workplace. Mr. Novey was the Production Editor and a Research Associate for Healthy Start: A Strategic Analysis and Policy Report, an in-depth evaluation of the Federal Healthy Start Initiative. Mr. Novey was a Research Associate on The Healthy Start Baby Love Plus Program Evaluation of Eastern North Carolina.

As the producer and co-author of the television feature "Surviving Childhood Cancer," Mr. Novey received an Emmy Award from the National Association of Television Arts and Sciences, and received the Mark of Excellence Award from the Society of Professional Journalists. Mr. Novey has provided consultation services to a variety of entities, including Danya International, Facts on File Publications/Sarah Lazin Books, The Waite Group/Addison Wesley Publications, HealthExcel, Inc., H.S. Dakin Company, and JanaType. Mr. Novey served as a member of the board of directors for Genet Publications, a nonprofit publishing enterprise providing rehabilitation and vocational training for substance abusers in recovery.

Project Management

The management of the development of this online course was the responsibility of Jan Armstrong, Jeanne Trumble-Hejduk, and Becky Stein of the American Academy of Addiction Psychiatry; and Mim Landry and Linda Kaplan at Danya International, Inc.

Jan Armstrong. Ms. Armstrong is the Executive Director of the American Academy of Addiction Psychiatry, having joined the Academy in February 2004. Prior to the Academy, she was a Senior Project Manager on the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) Alcohol Policy Information System project at the CDM Group. Ms. Armstrong served a chief management official for the Center for the Substance Abuse Prevention-funded National Center for the Advancement of Prevention. Ms. Armstrong founded and for 10 years, directed Armstrong Associates, an association management firm. As President of Armstrong Associates, she managed a national non-profit trade association, providing internal administration and external relations services. As a healthcare policy consultant, Ms. Armstrong provided consulting services to healthcare organizations, publications, and hospitals. As Director of Education at the Group Health Association of America, Ms. Armstrong led the Education Department and developed and managed large healthcare educational programs, institutes, and conferences.

Jeanne Trumble-Hejduk, MSW. Ms. Trumble is a former Executive Director of the American Academy of Addiction Psychiatry. She has worked in the field of alcohol and drug abuse with a focus on health professions education for more than 30 years beginning with her work in the early 1970's at the National Center for Alcohol Education, a project of the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism. She worked with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services for 17 years. She is the author of numerous articles and curricula and has trained health professionals in substance abuse prevention and treatment nationally and internationally. She has also served as a consultant to the Federal Government, private sector organizations, private foundations and universities.

Becky Stein, MPA. Ms. Stein is a former Executive Director of the American Academy of Addiction Psychiatry. She worked in the non-profit medical field for more than 10 years. She joined the American Academy of Addiction Psychiatry in 1998, became the Deputy Executive Director and later, the Executive Director. Ms. Stein has managed and developed a number of educational projects for health professionals. She has primary responsibility for developing educational meetings for more than 10 years. She managed the Review Course in Addiction Psychiatry for several years and worked on a project to Web-based course in this area.

Mim Landry. Mr. Landry is the Director of Medical and Science Communication at Danya International. He has 20 years' experience in behavioral health and expertise in addiction and mental health treatment and substance abuse prevention. His qualifications include public health education and communication, behavioral science research analysis, medical writing, policy evaluation, and clinical experience. He has written 18 books, curricula, or monographs, including his book Understanding Drugs of Abuse: The Processes of Addiction, Treatment, and Recovery. He has written 26 journal articles, 25 book or monograph chapters, and contributed to many publications. Mr. Landry provides public health, medical, and science writing, content and policy analysis, and behavioral science research evaluation, especially in relation to substance abuse and mental health. He develops prospectuses, directs literature searches, analyzes behavioral science and public health research, abstracts research, writes analyses, and develops curricula.

Linda Kaplan. Ms. Kaplan is the Executive Director of the Danya Institute, which has a cooperative agreement grant with the Center for Substance Abuse Treatment to manage the Central East Addiction Technology Transfer Center. Ms. Kaplan has many years of experience in alcoholism and drug addiction issues, with an emphasis on alcohol and drug addiction public policy issues, workforce development needs and advocating for more resources for alcoholism and drug addiction research and treatment. Previously, Ms. Kaplan served as the Director of Addiction Education and Training at Danya International. Ms. Kaplan served as the Executive Director of the National Association of Alcoholism and Drug Abuse Counselors for nine years. She is a frequent presenter at national conferences on substance abuse conducted by various State and Federal agencies, universities, and associations such as the National Association of State Alcohol and Drug Abuse Directors and the National Association of Addiction Treatment Providers. She is the author of numerous articles in such publications as Behavioral Health Management, Behavioral Healthcare Tomorrow, and Treatment Today, and she wrote 50 columns for The Counselor magazine.

The following individuals contributed to the development of this online course by providing a critical review of initial drafts of the document and providing substantive comments, suggestions, and recommendations.

Richard L. Brown, MD, MPH. Dr. Brown was instrumental in conceptualizing, planning, developing, and reviewing this online course. A member of the American Academy of Family Physicians and the immediate past president of the Association for Medical Education and Research in Substance Abuse, Dr. Brown is with the Department of Family Medicine at the University of Wisconsin-Madison Medical School. He is a specialist in family medicine and primary care, with expertise in clinical practice, research, and evaluation. Dr. Brown is a speaker and consultant on substance-related disorders, chronic pain, and behavioral management. He has published articles on such topics as substance-related disorders among primary care and general medical hospital patients, substance-related screening and brief interventions for primary care physicians, and teaching motivational interviewing to medical students. He received his medical degree from Brown University and completed his internship and residency at Overlook Hospital at Columbia University in Summit, New Jersey.
