The Treatment Improvement Exchange Website, developed by the Center for Substance Abuse Treatment, provides easy access to a wealth of publications developed for physicians and other healthcare professionals. The following subsections of the Website are especially relevant for physicians taking this course.

  • CSAT TIPs—The Treatment Improvement Protocols (TIPs) are best practice guidelines for addiction treatment. The range of topics developed as TIPs is very broad. Relevant to this online course are TIPs related to HIV/AIDS, brief interventions, screening and assessment, naltrexone, L-alpha acetyl methadol (LAAM), domestic violence, treatment matching, patient placement criteria, detoxification, and dual diagnosis.


  • CSAT TAPs—The Technical Assistance Publications (TAPs) are publications, manuals, and guides developed by the Center for Substance Abuse Treatment to offer practical responses to emerging issues and concerns in the substance abuse treatment field. Each TAP is developed by an expert who has had firsthand experience with the topic. Relevant to this online course are TAPs related to patient confidentiality, welfare reform, and treatment in rural and frontier areas.


  • Special Topics—This section of the Website provides easy access to numerous publications organized in the following categories: dual diagnosis, pharmacologic and alternative therapies, substance abuse and infectious disease, TANF/welfare reform, recovery community support, child welfare, children's health insurance program, criminal justice, healthcare reform, and rural frontier issues.


  • Other Online Publications—This section of the Website provides access to reports, studies, and manuals developed by Government and nongovernment groups. They are organized by (1) treatment issues, (2) ethical issues, and (3) policy issues.
