The course was developed in conjunction with the Pacific Southwest Addiction Technology Transfer Center (PSATTC). The PSATTC was responsible for the overall direction and format of the course. The PSATTC is located at the UCLA Integrated Substance Abuse Programs and serves Arizona, California, and New Mexico. The central mission of the PSATTC is to facilitate the transfer of addiction technology based on sound science through knowledge dissemination, training, and enhanced professional standards and practices that will expand the availability of effective treatment and recovery services for individuals with alcohol and drug problems in a culturally competent manner.
Parts of this online course for counselors were adapted from the online course for physicians Buprenorphine in the Treatment of Opioid Dependence, which was based on the curriculum Use of Buprenorphine in the Pharmacologic Management of Opioid Dependence, and the CSAT Buprenorphine Clinical Practice Guidelines.
Authors
Michael McCann, MA. The primary author of this online course for counselors is Michael McCann, MA. Mr. McCann has over 25 years experience in addiction treatment and research and has authored or co-authored over 25 articles and books in the area including a CSAT Technical Assistance Publication (TAP 7) on counseling in opioid treatment programs. He is the Associate Director and co-founder of the Matrix Institute. The Matrix Institute is part of the UCLA Integrated Substance Abuse Programs and provides outpatient treatment in five clinics in Southern California. Mr. McCann has developed and overseen the operation of clinics as well as several research projects. He has trained and lectured on outpatient treatment, pharmacologic and behavioral interventions, and methadone, LAAM, naltrexone, and buprenorphine treatments.
Jeanne Obert, MFT, MSM. Jeanne Obert is a founder and the Executive Director of the Matrix Institute, an outpatient treatment center in the greater Los Angeles area with five sites. She is the Director of Outpatient Services for the UCLA/Matrix Integrated Substance Abuse Programs. Jeanne teaches chemical dependency courses in a wide variety of settings including universities, treatment centers, managed care companies and for Governmental agencies nationally and internationally. She serves as a consultant for the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), the Center for Substance Abuse Treatment, and recently served as an Expert Trainer on a Motivational Enhancement study being lead by Yale University as part of the NIDA Community Trials Network. She has authored or co-authored over 35 articles, book chapters, and treatment manuals.
Walter Ling, MD. Dr. Ling is a Professor of Psychiatry and the Director of the Integrated Substance Abuse Programs (ISAP) at UCLA, one of the foremost substance abuse research groups in the U.S. and worldwide. Dr. Ling is board certified in neurology and psychiatry, and is active in both research and clinical work. Dr. Ling has been listed in the "Best Doctors in America," "Best Doctors in the West," and "Best Doctors in Los Angeles." Dr. Ling's work in opiate pharmacotherapy has provided pivotal information for the approval of LAAM, naltrexone, and buprenorphine. He is the Principal Investigator of the NIDA Clinical Trials Network (CTN) Pacific Node and serves as the Lead Principal Investigator for the CTN 0001, 0002 and 0003 buprenorphine studies.
