Why Should I Care About Welfare Reform?

  • In recent years, there has been a dramatic shift in the nation's and States' approaches to welfare. The focus is on welfare-to-work, and the stakes are high. Many clients must find and sustain work, or they can lose their basic cash benefits.

  • At the same time, as much as 40 percent of welfare recipients have substance-related problems. This proportion is likely to grow as people without major barriers to work move off welfare, leaving addicted recipients increasingly comprising addiction professionals' caseloads.

  • Addiction treatment professionals can have an important role in helping the most at-risk of addiction treatment clients reduce their substance abuse, find jobs, and leave welfare.

  • The ability of treatment professionals to help their most vulnerable clients is greatly enhanced by learning information and strategies for working with clients who are also involved with welfare reform, specifically Temporary Assistance to Needy Families.
