Six Critical Issues

The remainder of this module addresses six critical issues that treatment professionals may need to address in their work with clients who are also TANF recipients. Each of these issues has been identified in the literature as a critical problem that needs resolution to provide the best possible support for welfare reform clients who have substance abuse problems.

For each of these six issues, we encourage you to think about the strategies you are currently using. As you review these issues, look for new approaches you can incorporate into your work that will help you better address the problems and needs of your clients. The six critical issues are:

  • Issue One: See the bigger picture

  • Issue Two: See the addicted parent

  • Issue Three: Give children a voice

  • Issue Four: Work with other system requirements

  • Issue Five: Carefully update service plans

  • Issue Six: Teach about substance abuse.
